महान लेखक, फोटोग्राफर व शिकारी जिम कॉर्बेट का मसूरी से रहा गहरा नाता।
मसूरी : ब्रिटिश काल के दौरान उत्तराखंड को बाघों से बचा कर मारने वाले जाने माने शिकारी जिम कार्बेट के जन्म दिवस पर इतिहासकार गोपाल भारद्वाज ने उनके चित्र पर पुष्पांजलि अर्पित कर याद किया व उनके योगदान के बारे में जानकारी दी। उन्होंने कहा कि उनका मसूरी से गहरा नाता रहा है। वे एक महान लेखक, फोटो ग्राफर व शिकारी थे। उन्होंने उस जमाने में उत्तराखंड के लोगों को आदमखोर बाघों से मुक्ति दिलाई थी। उनकी कई वस्तुएं फोटोग्राफ आज भी मौजूद हैं।
महान शिकारी, लेखक व फोटोगाफर के साथ ही जानवरों के जानकार जिम कार्बेट का जन्म 1875 में हुआ था। लेकिन उनका मसूरी से गहरा संबंध रहा है। इस सबंध में जानकारी देते हुए इतिहासकार गोपाल भारद्वाज ने बताया कि जिम कार्बेट ने भले ही लोगों को आदमखोर बाघों से बचाया था लेकिन असली में वह वन्यजंतु प्रेमी थे तथा जानवरों के बारे में जानते थे। उन्होंने उन बाघों को मजबूरी में मारा जिन्होंने मानव पर हमले किये व उनका शिकार किया व मारने के बाद वह उनके प्रति संवेदना भी व्यक्त करते थे। उन्होंने उस समय उत्तराखंड के कई क्षेत्रों को आदमखोर बाघाों से मुक्ति दिलाई थी। उन्होंने हमारे देश, मानवजाति व वन्य प्राणियों के लिए बहुत कार्य किए उनके मित्र थे। कई पुस्तकें जानवरों के संबंध में लिखी व बाघों के आंतक से मुक्ति दिलाने पर मैन ईटर ऑफ रूद्रप्रयाग मैन ईटर ऑफ चंपावत, मैन ईटर ऑफ कुमांउ, मैन ईटर ऑफ तल्ला देश आदि कई पुस्तकें अपने अनुभवों को आधार पर लिखी। वह कभी किसी जानवर को मारने के पक्ष में कभी नहीं रहते थे व मजबूरी में वह मारते थे व उसके बाद अपनी उनके प्रति संवेदना भी व्यक्त करते थे। उस समय दूर दूर से मीलों चलकर लोग उनसे बाघों के आंतक से मुक्ति दिलाने के लिए उनके पास आते थे। उन्होंने कहा कि आज वनों में जहां जंगल होते थे वहां मानव का कब्जा होता जा रहा है, लालच में उनके स्थानों को घेरा जा रहा है ऐसे में जानवर कहां रहेंगे। वहीं जंगलों में सफारी घुमाई जा रही है, वीआईपी को घुमाया जा रहा है व उनकी शांत जिंदगी में दखल दिया जा रहा है। मानव जानवर संघर्ष इसी कारण बढ रहा है। उन्होंने कहाकि विदेशी होते हुए भी उनके जैसा जानवर प्रेमी व जनता को बाघ के आंतंक से मुंक्ति दिलाने का कार्य किया, उनके जीवन से प्रेरणा लेनी चाहिए। उन्होंने बताया कि उनके पिता क्रिस्टोफर विलियम कार्बेट का जन्म भारत के मेरठ में 1822 को हुआथा उन्होंने मात्र 21 वर्ष की आयु सेना के हार्स आर्टिलरी रेजिमेंट में सहायक ऐयोथिकेरी के पद पर कार्य किया व 1845 में पहला विवाह मेरी एन मोरो से किया व तीन वर्ष बाद सेना से त्याग पत्र देकर डाक विभाग में नौकरी की व मसूरी में कार्यभार संभाला व मसूरी में बीस वर्ष तक कार्य किया। उनका दूसरा विवाह मसूरी में ही 1859 में मेरी जेन से लंढौर सेंट पॉल चर्च में हुआ था उनका 1862 में तबादला नैनीताल हो गया औश्र वहीं पर जिम का जन्म हुआ। सन 1881 में जब जिम केवल छह वर्ष के थे तो उनके पिता का निधन हो गया। गोपाल भारद्वाज ने बताया कि उनके कई रिस्तेदार मसूरी में रहते थे व वे लगातार मसूरी आते रहते थे। उनके द्वारा प्रयोग किये जाने वाले जंगल कुकर, केरोसिन आयल स्टोव आदि थे वहीं उनके द्वारा खींची गई कई फोटो ग्राफ भी उनके पास है। क्यों कि वह एक अच्छे फोटोग्राफर भी थे।
